Tips For Planning Your Wedding Flowers

  • It sounds simple, but it really is a good idea to have some thoughts on the types of flowers you like (or more importantly, dislike) before meeting with your floral designer. Have a look through some magazines such as Ideal Bride or Queensland Brides, etc. and browse some websites for ideas that you like. Bear in mind the colour scheme for your wedding, the time of year and of course your personal taste.

  • It is also helpful to have an idea of the design of your bridal gown (and the bridesmaids) to ensure that the flowers compliment their style.

  • Simplify if you are on a limited budget - remember that the more work involved in your flowers the greater the cost, so if you are looking to keep the cost to a minimum you need to keep it simple. Stylish doesn't always mean complicated - you can have simple, modern and elegant flowers without breaking the bank. There are some very modern bridal arrangements that use minimal flowers and can look spectacular. Similarly, single stems in small vases lined in a row down a rectangular table can look beautiful.

  • Seasons - Consider the season in which you are marrying and ask the florist for their recommendations on the seasons best. If you have your heart set on a particular variety of flower it is advisable that you check with your florist before setting your date to see if it will be in season at the time of your wedding.

  • Centrepiece Size - There is nothing worse than a centrepiece that is too large and doesn't allow guests to see each other across the table. Think about your seating arrangement and bear this in mind when deciding on the shape and structure of your flower arrangements.

  • Photo Opportunities - ensure that you advise your florist of when you expect your photographer to arrive. You want to ensure that the bouquets, corsages, and buttonholes are delivered before the photographer arrives.

  • Take care of your flowers - to keep your flowers looking their best throughout the day there are things you can do to take care of them, Eg. Keep the flowers in the shade or an air-conditioned room for as long as possible before they need to be set-up. Ask your florist for tips on what you should do to get the best out of your flowers on the day to ensure your photos at the end of the night are as perfect as the start of the day.
